Sports Principal Secretary (PS) Peter Tum, confirmed on Tuesday 14 January that Nyayo National Stadium is fully prepared to host the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The tournament, featuring 19 teams, will run from Saturday 1 to Friday 28 February across three East African countries—Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Tum made the announcement during a press briefing at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) ahead of CHAN's Wednesday draw.

Accompanied by CHAN Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Chairman Nicholas Musonye and CAF Head of Security Christian Emeruwa, Tum expressed confidence in Kenya’s readiness after months of preparations.

He noted that all critical sections of the stadium had been completed, with the remaining canopy installation scheduled post-tournament.

We are preparing our stadiums for AFCON. Nyayo is complete and ready for CHAN; only the canopy remains and will be done after the tournament,” Tum stated.

Regarding the Kasarani Stadium, Tum highlighted that while only 25% of the work is done, completion is expected after CHAN in readiness for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

"Kasarani is a place we are preparing to host Africa (AFCON), the facility is 25% done and after CHAN the facility will be done to match AFCON requirements," he added.

Tum also urged the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to build a competitive team, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting the national squad.

As a government, we are providing resources to ensure Kenya remains competitive in the tournament,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, Tum assured the public that all preparations for Wednesday’s CHAN draw have been finalized.

The draw, scheduled for Wednesday 15 January at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), will reveal group pairings for the 2024 competition.

CAF’s head of security, Christian Emeruwa, praised Kenya’s readiness, citing seamless coordination among key agencies.

"We have held serious meetings with host countries and are confident in Kenya’s preparations, especially regarding security," he explained.

LOC Chairman, Musonye echoed the sentiments, encouraging Kenyans to rally behind the tournament.

“We are set to cover CHAN professionally. Tomorrow’s draw marks the start of this prestigious event—let’s promote it as a national achievement,” he concluded.
